Basket Weave Stitch

The basket weave stitch is a textured filling stitch used in hand embroidery to create a woven, interlaced appearance. Worked over a rectangular or square area, it uses offset diagonal stitches that alternate direction in adjacent rows, producing a pattern that resembles a basket or checkerboard. It’s excellent for covering shapes with even texture. Tension should be kept consistent to maintain the woven look; too tight distorts the pattern, too loose looks sloppy. Use a ground fabric with a stable weave and mark a grid if precise alignment is needed. Variations can include wider or narrower stitch spans to change the scale of the weave.
